School Board Member Volunteer Job Description

Summary: School board members are visionary leaders who provide fiduciary oversight, evaluate progress, recommend budgets, develop strategic plans, and support the School Administrator. They commit to a three year term of service and participate in monthly meetings and other initiatives as needed.

Responsibilities:
Agree on Board goals and evaluate progress: School board members must collaborate to set annual
goals and regularly review progress towards achieving them.

 

Evaluate and nurture the School Administrator: Board members are responsible for hiring, evaluating,
and supporting the School Administrator.

 

Recommend a school budget: Board members must prepare a budget that ensures the financial
solvency of the institution and present it to the congregation for approval.

 

Develop and approve a strategic plan for the school: Board members work with the School
Administrator to create a strategic plan that guides the school's direction and growth.

 

Actively support and promote the mission of the school: Board members are expected to advocate for
the school and promote its mission within the community.

 

Guard against conflicts of interest: Board members must avoid conflicts of interest and recuse
themselves from decisions that may benefit them or their family members.

 

Commit to self-improvement or training: Board members must be willing to improve their skills and
knowledge as Christian school board members.

 

Read the board handbook: Board members are required to read the board handbook at the beginning
of each term of service.

 

Participate in background checks and annual child safety training: Board members must undergo
background checks and complete annual child safety training.

Qualifications:
Must demonstrate a vibrant a testimony of faith in Christ, growth and spiritual maturity.
 

Must participate in monthly meetings and other initiatives as needed.
 

Must actively support and promote the mission of the school.
 

Must guard against conflicts of interest.
 

Must commit to self-improvement or training.
 

Must undergo background checks and complete annual child safety training.
 

Current SMCA employees and spouses of current SMCA Board members are not eligible to be
nominated for school board membership.
